BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern swept the Southern Athletic Association basketball awards this week, with seniors Kayla Ford and Larry Thomas earning Player of the Week honors as announced today by the league office.
Ford, a forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., led the Panthers to two home wins this weekend, as the Panthers defeated Rhodes on Friday and Hendrix on Sunday. On Friday she scored 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting, and pulled down six rebounds with two assists. On Sunday, Ford posted a career-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting along with 10 rebounds, two assists, and a steal. For the two games, she averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting .533 (16-of-30) from the field, .500 (6-of-12) from three-point range, and .889 (8-of-9) at the free throw line.
Thomas, a guard from Atlanta, Ga., continued his stellar senior season this weekend, helping BSC win two at home including an upset of league-leading Rhodes on Friday evening. Against the Lynx he scored 23 points with seven rebounds, and he followed that up on Sunday against Hendrix with 33 points and eight rebounds. For the week Thomas averaged 28.0 points and 7.5 rebounds with three steals, an assist, and a block. He shot .708 (17-of-24) from the field, .556 (5-of-9) from three-point range, and .895 (17-of-19) at the free throw line.
