LaGRANGE, Ga.—Led by senior Halle Knowles with 18 points, and senior Yorisha Bryant with 17 rebounds, the Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season Saturday afternoon on the road with a 57-40 victory against LaGrange.
The teams had trouble getting going offensively at first, with the first basket coming nearly four minutes into the first quarter. After LaGrange pulled out to a 5-0 lead, BSC came back quickly and then pulled ahead 8-7 on a Knowles three-pointer with three seconds left in the quarter.
LaGrange pulled out to an 11-10 lead early in the second quarter, but BSC put together a 9-0 run to go up 19-11, and would never trail the rest of the game.
BSC led 24-15 by the end of the second quarter, and raced out to a 30-17 lead two minutes into the third. LaGrange used a 7-0 run to cut it to 30-24, but BSC ended the third quarter with a 13-4 run to go up 43-28.
BSC hit its largest lead of the game at the 4:56 mark of the fourth quarter, 55-35, on a layup by junior Jameice Holmes, and held on to win by 17.
Knowles shot 6-10, including 6-9 from three-point range, for her game-high 18 points, and she also led with three assists. Bryant's 17 rebounds were also a game-high, and she also recorded 10 points for a double-double and had two blocks.
BSC is in action again on Friday, Nov. 20, opening its home slate against Emory at 6 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
