BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—After capturing the 2016 Southern Athletic Association crown on Sunday, the Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team will make its first NCAA appearance this weekend in Maryville, Tenn., facing Lynchburg College on Friday at Maryville College at 5:30 p.m. EST.
The Panthers had their best record in the 16-year history of the program, going 24-3 under first-year Head Coach Mike Ricks, who was voted SAA Coach of the Year. BSC also won a share of the SAA regular season title after going 11-3 in conference action.
Senior Yorisha Bryant, who is in her first season on the team, leads the Panthers this season in scoring (16.0ppg) and rebounding (9.3rpg). She ranked first in the SAA in scoring and second in rebounding, and also led the conference in blocks (42). Bryant was voted SAA Newcomer of the Year prior to the start of the conference tournament.
The LC women captured the program's first Old Dominion Athletic Conference title on Sunday to earn the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Hornets set the program record for wins in a season with 24 and only have four losses on the year. Lynchburg has won 10-straight contests entering NCAA Tournament play.
Host No. 13 Maryville will face No. 19 Mary Washington on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with the two winners squaring off on Saturday.
