Panthers Host 2017 SAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After repeating as Southern Athletic Association regular season champions, the Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team will host the leagues postseason tournament for the second consecutive year.  BSC welcomes seven teams to the Bill Battle Coliseum this Friday, Feb. 24 as they vie for the 2017 tournament title and bid to the NCAA tournament.


Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students with ID.  All students, faculty, and staff of SAA institutions can enter for free with school ID. And all children under age six are free.

Game 1: Friday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m.

#1 Birmingham-Southern College Panthers (15-10, 10-4 SAA) vs. #8 Rhodes College Lynx (5-20, 4-10 SAA)

These two teams have split their meetings this season.  BSC won the first encounter 61-48 back on January 6 at Rhodes.  But then the Lynx returned the favor by winning 47-40 in Birmingham on February 3.  This is their first meeting in the SAA tournament.



Game 2: Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.

#4 Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels (14-11, 8-6 SAA) vs. #5 Sewanee Tigers (9-15, 6-8 SAA)

Both team won their home game against each other this season. Oglethorpe took the first meeting at home 74-69 on January 8.  Sewanee then won at home 53-50 on February 5.  This will be their first meeting in the SAA tournament.



Game 3: Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.

#2 Millsaps College Majors (16-9, 9-5) vs. #7 Centre College Colonels (7-18, 5-9 SAA)

Both teams won their home games in the matchup this season.  Millsaps won their first meeting 71-40 on January 22 and then Centre took the second game 56-52 a week later on January 29.  The two met in the conference semifinals last year after sixth seeded Centre upset #3 seed Hendrix 56-54.  But the Colonels ran out of steam and fell 61-36 to second seeded Millsaps who went on to fall 62-52 in the championship game against BSC.   The all-time postseason series is split 1-1 as Centre defeated the Majors in the 2014 SAA semifinals.



Game 4: Friday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m.

#3 Hendrix College Warriors (15-10, 9-5 SAA) vs. #6 Berry College Vikings (11-14, 5-9 SAA)

The Warriors swept both meetings between the teams this season.  They won 69-45 on January 20 and then 58-34 on January 27.  This will be their first meeting in the SAA tournament.



Semifinals: Saturday, Feb. 25

Game 5 – 4 p.m., Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2

Game 6 – 6 p.m., Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4



Championship: Sunday, Feb. 26

Game 7 – 2 p.m., Winner Game 5 vs. Winner Game 6
