BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A total team effort helped push the Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team over Millsaps College 62-57 in their Southern Athletic Association home opener Tuesday. BSC (7-5, 1-0 SAA) continues to dominate at home, boasting a 5-0 record inside Bill Battle Coliseum.
Four Panthers finished in double-figures, led by Christian McGowan (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) and Leah Middleton (Decatur, Ga./St. Pius X HS). The pair scored 11 points each. McGowan went 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Emilee Olsen (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) and Elizabeth Philpot (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) finished right behind them with 10 points each, respectively.
BSC led for most of regulation in the tight contest. Millsaps took the lead 57-56 with 1:19 left in the game. Middleton responded with a jumper in the paint with 13 seconds left to regain the lead. The Panthers then held Millsaps scoreless as they went on a 6-0 run to close out the game.
BSC hits the road next. They face SAA rivals Centre College on Friday, Jan. 5 and Sewanee on Sunday, Jan. 7.
