BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's golf team is ranked 16th in the Golf World/NGCA Division III preseason coaches' poll, it was announced this week.
The Panthers, who ended the season ranked 20th back in April, received 127 points, 10 points behind Saint Mary's College, who finished 15th in the NCAA Championship last year, and two points ahead of Amherst, who was sixth. BSC placed second at the SCAC Championship last season, but did not make the NCAA field.
With 15 straight NCAA titles, Methodist enters the 2012-13 season the unanimous choice of the 18 votes as the No. 1 team in the poll. DePauw, the 2012 NCAA runner-up, claimed the No. 2 spot in the poll, the Tigers winning three times in 13 starts a year ago. Centre, who will compete with Birmingham-Southern in the newly-formed Southern Athletic Association beginning this year, earned the No. 3 spot with Williams and Washington University in St. Louis rounding out the top five.
The Panthers open their 2012 fall campaign this weekend at the Piedmont College Fall Invitational at The Orchard Golf and Country Club in Clarkesville, Ga.
