Richard Schmidt began his first year at the helm of the Birmingham-Southern College men’s and women’s golf programs in the fall of 2016.
He was an assistant golf professional at the Country Club of Birmingham and Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis during his career, conducting clinics and organizing golf tournaments.
A native of Houston, Texas, Schmidt’s love of golf grew from time spent at the famed Champions Golf Club under the watchful eyes of 1956 Masters and PGA Championship winner Jackie Burke Jr., and 1960 PGA Championship winner Jay Hebert. His mother, a very decorated amateur golfer in the state of Texas, won the 1989 Women’s Southern Amateur.
Schmidt is a member of the U.S. Golf Association and Pine Tree Country Club. He graduated from Jacksonville State in 1999 with a degree in criminal justice and currently resides in Birmingham, Ala. with his wife, Alison, and two sons, Griff and Reese.
