BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Led by #Lyndsay Griffin# with four goals and #Chelsea Van Voorhis# with three, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team defeated Methodist University, 11-6, Friday evening at Panther Stadium in the first game in program history.
The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the game, scoring five goals in the first 10 minutes of play - two by Griffin, and one each by Van Voorhis, #Ashley Johnson# (with an assist by #Katie Gregory#), and #Cynthia Andrews#.
The Monarchs got on the board with 19:20 left in the half on a goal by Andrea DiStefano, and scored twice more - at the 14:17 mark by Abby Harmon, assisted by Jasmine Stephens, and at the 12:18 mark, again from DiStefano - cutting the BSC lead to 5-3. Van Voorhis put one more up at the 11:48 mark, pushing the lead to 6-3 at the half.
#Brit La Palm# was the first to score in the second half, putting BSC up 7-3, but a goal from Stephens put it back to a three-goal lead for BSC at 7-4. Griffin, Van Voorhis, and Gregory followed that with three straight goals, however, putting the Panthers up 10-4 by the 9:56 mark.
Methodist's Krystal Poirier, assisted by DiStefano, scored at the 6:01 mark, but the Panthers answered with a Griffin goal with 2:16 left to play, putting the score at 11-5. DiStefano was able to score with 36 seconds left in the game for a final score of 11-6 in favor of BSC.
BSC out-shot Methodist, 30-17, and had 22 ground balls to the Monarchs' 16. The Panthers also won 14 of the 19 draw controls in the game, but committed 17 turnovers to Methodist's 16.
Griffin led BSC with eight shots, followed by Johnson with six and Van Voorhis and La Palm with five. #Katelyn Carroll# led with four ground balls. For Methodist, Stephens and DiStefano led with four shots apiece, while Diane Starrantino led with five ground balls.
In goal, BSC's #Katie Bates# picked up the win after making four saves in the 60-minute game. Lindsey Cosgray recorded 12 saves for the Monarchs.
The Panthers are in action again on Sunday, March 15, taking on Kenyon College in Sewanee, Tenn.
