BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Led by #Chelsea Van Voorhis# with four goals and three assists, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team defeated Tennessee Wesleyan, 18-8, Saturday afternoon at Panther Stadium. BSC moves to 4-3, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-4.
The Panthers went up 2-0 to start the game with goals from Van Voorhis and #Brit La Palm# less than 15 seconds apart, and the Bulldogs got on the board with a goal by Whitney Dixe at the 22-minute mark. BSC scored three straight after that - two goals from #Ashley Johnson# and one from #Katie Gregory# - to go up 5-1 by the 16-minute mark.
Tess Sasse and Dixe scored two more for TWC to cut the lead to 5-3, but BSC answered with two more, from #Lyndsay Griffin# and Van Voorhis, to push the advantage to 7-3. Sasse found the net again for the Bulldogs, but the Panthers closed out the half with six straight goals: La Palm, Van Voorhis, Gregory, #Alexis Sweda#, Van Voorhis again, and #Cynthia Andrews#. BSC led 13-4 at the half.
Gregory scored again less than four minutes into the second half off a free position shot, putting the Panthers up 14-4, but a goal by Christine Hatton cut the lead back to nine at the 23:38 mark. La Palm and Sweda scored back-to-back goals to increase the lead to 16-5, but Wesleyan answered with goals from Dixe and Clevenger to cut it to 16-7 with 13:13 left to play.
Griffin scored again for the Panthers less than three minutes later, and Dixe found the Panthers' net again for the last Bulldog goal of the game at the 6:27 mark. La Palm wrapped up the scoring at the 6:15 mark, putting BSC up 18-8 for the eventual victory.
#Katie Bates# was the winning goalkeeper for the Panthers, making three saves, while Bethany Shenberger took the loss for TWC after recording 11 saves.
La Palm led BSC with eight shots and #Katelyn Carroll# led with seven ground balls. Dixe led the Bulldogs with four shots, while Maranda Plana led with seven ground balls. Overall, BSC out-shot TWC 37-11 and led 18-6 on draw controls.
The Panthers are back in action at home on Friday, April 17, taking on Sewanee at 7 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
