Women’s Lacrosse defeats North Central College, 16-7

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Led by sophomore Lyndsay Griffin with five goals, the Birmingham-Southern women’s lacrosse team defeated North Central College, 16-7, Wednesday evening at Panther Stadium. BSC moves to 6-2 with the win, while the Cardinals drop to 0-3.

The Panthers scored the first six goals of the game – two from Griffin and one each from junior Judy Montalvo, sophomore Chelsea Van Voorhis, and freshmen Stephanie Gore and Anna Barry. NCC broke the shutout at the 17:09 mark with a goal from Caroline Gully, and the Cardinals scored twice more to cut the BSC lead to 6-3 by the 8:28 mark of the first half. BSC closed out the first period with goals from Van Voorhis, Barry, and Griffin to lead 9-3 at the half.

BSC opened the second half similarly to the first half, with six straight goals, two apiece from Griffin, Gore, and sophomore Alexis Sweda, going up 15-3 with 12:09 left to play. North Central scored two after that to cut it to 15-5, but a goal from freshman Lexi Smith put the Panthers up 16-5. The Cardinals were able to score twice more in the last 3:45 of play before BSC clinched the 16-7 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Bates made nine saves, while North Central goalie Shannon Prince made five.

Griffin led the Panthers with six shots, freshman Sarah Minick recorded a game-high three assists, and sophomore Amber Hernandez and freshman Elizabeth Perry led with three ground balls each. Griffin was also impressive with six draw controls won. For North Central, Gully led with three goals, Amy Frazzini led with six shots, and she and Natalie Vivacqua led with four ground balls each.

BSC held the advantage in shots (25-18), ground balls (18-15), draw controls (17-6), but also committed more turnovers than the Cardinals (16-12).

The Panthers are back at home this Friday, March 26, taking on the University of Dallas at 7 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
