ANGOLA, Ind. – Led by sophomores Lyndsay Griffin and Chelsea Van Voorhis with five goals apiece, the Birmingham-Southern women’s lacrosse team closed out the season with an 18-8 win against Fontbonne, Saturday. The Panthers end the season with a 12-3 record in the program’s second year.
Fontbonne scored the first goal of the game, but BSC came back with three straight (two from Griffin and one from freshman Sarah Minick) to go up 3-1. Van Voorhis then scored, followed by two more Fontbonne goals to tie things up, 4-4, by the 15-minute mark. But the Panthers were able to score five straight goals, including the go-ahead goal by Griffin – and keep Fontbonne from scoring – for the rest of the period, and led 9-4 at the half.
BSC opened the second half with goals from Griffin and freshman Elizabeth Perry, followed by two goals from Fontbonne to cut the lead to 11-6. The Panthers found the net five straight times after that, and then traded goals with the Griffins down the stretch before eventually winning 18-8.
BSC out-shot Fontbonne 39-25 and led in draw controls, 16-10. Griffin, junior Judy Montalvo, and freshman Anna Barry led with four ground balls each, and Barry also led with five draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Bates made 13 saves after playing the entire season in goal for the Panthers.
Overall this year, BSC went 7-0 at home and out-scored its opponents 224-127.
