Women's Lacrosse falls to Berry, 17-15

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team dropped a tough match at home today, losing to Berry College, 17-15, in Panther Stadium. BSC falls to 7-6, while Berry moves to 8-7. It was Senior Day for BSC, as seniors Ashley Johnson and Judy Montalvo were honored during a pregame ceremony.

Berry scored the first two goals of the game in the first two minutes of play, but the Panthers tied things up by the 24:21 mark. The Vikings went on a scoring tear after that, however, going up 9-2 with seven straight goals. BSC scored two more in a row to cut it to 9-4, but Berry got one more in before halftime to go up 10-4.

Both teams scored a goal each in the opening minute of the second half, and the Panthers then scored three straight in under a minute, cutting it to 11-8 with 25:25 left to play. The teams traded goals four times after that, and the Panthers were then able to score three in a row to cut it to 15-14 with 5:28 left in the game. Berry scored at the 4:38 mark to go back up by two, but the Panthers answered again, cutting it to one on a goal by freshman Hailey Massa with 2:45 left. The Vikings held BSC scoreless after that, however, and added one more goal with 11 seconds left to go up 17-15 for the win.

Junior Lyndsay Griffin led with four goals, while Johnson had three. Massa and juniors Alexis Sweda and Chelsea Van Voorhis each had two goals, and sophomore Stephanie Gore and freshman Madeline Golden scored one apiece. Johnson and Van Voorhis also each had two assists. Gore led with six ground balls and five caused turnovers for the Panthers, and Johnson won seven draw controls.

For Berry, Jenny Miller led all players with six goals, and Kaylee Lane led with six ground balls.

Junior Katie Bates played all 60 minutes in goal for the Panthers, recording nine saves; Taylor Martin got the win for the Vikings, making four saves.

The Panthers are in action again at home on Tuesday, April 19, taking on Sewanee in the last regular season game of the year at 6 p.m. in Panther Stadium. BSC then hosts the 2011 SCAC Championship next weekend, beginning with a noon game on Friday, April 22.
