BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team lost at home to regular-
season SCAC champion Sewanee, 23-11, in the last regular season game of the year, Tuesday evening in Panther Stadium.
BSC ends the regular season at 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC; Sewanee moves to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
BSC will host the 2011 SCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship beginning this Friday, April 22. The fourth-seeded Panthers will face fifth-seed Millsaps at noon. Click hereto view the complete bracket (PDF).
The teams traded goals in the first two minutes of tonight's game, followed by a six-goal scoring run by the Tigers to take a 7-1 lead by the 21:01 mark. BSC scored three straight after that to cut it to 7-4 with 14:46 left to play before Sewanee scored four straight to stretch the lead back out to seven. The Panthers scored another three in a row, cutting it to 11-7 with 4:17 left in the half, but the Tigers added two more goals before halftime to go up 13-7.
The Tigers came out of the halftime break and scored seven straight goals, extending their lead to 20-7 with 16:28 left in the game. BSC out-scored Sewanee 4-3 in the last 14 minutes, but it wasn't enough for the Panthers to come close to the Tigers, who won 23-11.
Sewanee's Molly Arnold led all players with six goals, while BSC junior Lyndsay Griffin led the Panthers with four. Sophomore Stephanie Gore led the Panthers with nine ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Griffin led with five draw controls.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Bates recorded four saves for BSC, while Sewanee keeper Amy Nusbaum made 11 saves.
