Panthers edge past Tennessee Wesleyan, 9-8, in season opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Courtesy of a hat trick from junior Stephanie Gore, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2012 season with an exciting 9-8 victory against Tennessee Wesleyan, Saturday afternoon in Panther Stadium.

The game was close the whole way, with the teams exchanging goals the entire first half to a 5-5 halftime score. The second half was close as well, although BSC was able to extend its lead to two goals, 8-6, before the Bulldogs scored twice to tie things up again with 7:35 remaining. The game-winner, scored by Gore, came with 3:59 left in the game.

Gore led all players with her three goals, followed by senior Chelsea Van Voorhis and sophomore Madeline Golden with two goals apiece. Gore also led with 10 ground balls, four draw controls, and four caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Bates played all 60 minutes in the net, recording seven saves.

The Panthers are back in action on Feb. 21, facing Augustana at 5 p.m. in Panther Stadium.
