BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team picked up a victory Monday evening in a thrilling 15-13 win against Aquinas College in Panther Stadium.
The Panthers move to 3-2, while the Saints fall to 0-1.
BSC scored the first goal of the game 30 seconds in, and Aquinas answered with two quick goals to go up 2-1 in the first four minutes. After that it became a game of runs, as the Panthers scored four straight to go up 5-2, and the Saints scored eight straight - including six unanswered to end the half with an 8-5 lead.
BSC scored four more in a row to cut the lead to 10-9 with 11:18 remaining, after which the teams traded goals and the Saints scored two in a row to pull ahead 13-10 with 8:03 left in the game. But the Panthers went into high gear down the stretch, scoring three goals over the next three minutes to tie it up, 13-13.
Neither team would score again for the next nearly four minutes. With 1:16 remaining, and overtime looking more likely, senior Chelsea Van Voorhis scored the go-ahead goal for BSC. The Panthers called a timeout, after which the Saints won the draw control but turned the ball over. After a ground ball pickup by junior Stephanie Gore, sophomore Logan Harris found the back of the net again with two seconds left on the clock, effectively clinching the BSC victory.
Van Voorhis and Harris led with three goals apiece, and Van Voorhis and senior Alexis Sweda also added two assists each. Gore led with 10 ground balls, four caused turnovers, and four draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper Katie Bates played the entire 60 minutes, making 13 saves.
Aquinas out-shot BSC 37-31, but BSC led with 37 ground balls to the Saints' 26. Aquinas also won 20 draw controls to the Panthers' 11 and turned it over less with 22 turnovers to BSC's 27.
The Panthers are at home again this Wednesday, March 7, taking on Reinhardt College at 5 p.m. in Panther Stadium.
