BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Junior Alex Smith scored the game-winner in double overtime as the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team defeated Reinhardt University, 12-11, Wednesday evening at Panther Stadium.
The Panthers move to 4-2 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 3-2.
The entire game was close, with neither team ever leading by more than two. The score was tied 3-3 at halftime, and BSC led late in the second half, 9-7, before Reinhardt came back to score two goals in the last four minutes to tie it up 9-9 and send the game to overtime.
The teams traded goals in the first overtime period, playing to an 11-11 tie at the end of the six minutes, which sent the game to another six-minute overtime period, but this time it was golden goal or sudden death. BSC senior Chelsea Van Voorhis won the draw control, and Smith scored the game-winner less than 20 seconds in, assisted by senior Alexis Sweda.
Senior Katie Bates made 12 saves for the Panthers in goal. Van Voorhis led BSC with five of its 12 goals. Junior Stephanie Gore led with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers, and sophomore Madeline Golden led with seven draw controls.
As a team, the Panthers out-shot the Eagles 33-32, and won 15 of the game's 27 draw controls. BSC turned the ball over 20 times, twice less than Reinhardt.
The Panthers are off for the next two weeks, with their next game coming against LaGrange on March 21 in LaGrange, Ga.
