Panthers close out regular season with 19-5 win over Dallas

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team finished off the regular season today with a 19-5 victory against Dallas in Panther Stadium.

The Panthers end the year at 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the SCAC, and will play in next weekend's conference tournament as the fourth seed, taking on the top seed on Saturday, April 28, at noon in Sewanee, Tenn.

Junior Stephanie Gore was particularly impressive on defense today, recording a single-game NCAA-, conference- and program-record 17 ground balls, as well as a program-record nine caused turnovers. She leads the nation in ground balls and ranks second in caused turnovers.

Senior Chelsea Van Voorhis opened the scoring, followed by a Dallas goal less than a minute later, but the Panthers recorded five straight (including two more from Van Voorhis) after that to go up 6-1 by the 19:20 mark of the first half. The Crusaders put one more on the board before BSC finished off the half with five more in a row, leading 11-2 at halftime.

Dallas scored the first goal of the second half, 30 seconds in, and the Panthers responded with four straight, increasing their lead to 15-3 with 18:28 left to play. BSC out-scored the Crusaders 5-2 in the remainder of the game.

Senior Alexis Sweda led with five goals, and Van Voorhis led with four assists. She also scored four goals. Sophomore Madeline Golden also had three goals and two assists, and senior Cynthia Andrews scored twice.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Bates recorded six saves, and freshman Kelsi Lindquist made one.

The Panthers out-shot Dallas39-14, with 38 ground balls to the Crusaders' 26. BSC was also 19-of-20 on clears, while Dallas was 12-of-28, and the Panthers committed 15 turnovers while the Crusaders had 35.
