BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After finishing 3-4 in conference play, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team heads to Centre College as the No. 5 seed for the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Southern Athletic Association Tournament. The Panthers (6-9) are looking for redemption after they fell to the Colonels earlier this season. Game time is set for 6 p.m. ET on Friday, April 21.
"The girls are really excited," said Head Coach Courtney Williams. "I think they are ready to get revenge because we didn't play our best game against them earlier in the season. We're just excited and focused. Our goal is to win the tournament and go to NCAA's."
BSC will look to leading scorers Natalie Daniel (Ooltewah, Tenn./Baylor School), Jade Cox (Rome, Ga./Darlington School), and Katie Gleeson (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin HS) to help pace the offensive attack. Daniel ranks nationally in five different categories and has a team-best 58 goals going into the tournament, 12th most in the nation. She also leads the team in draw controls.
Cox has made an immediate impact for the Panthers. The freshman also ranks nationally in five different categories, leads the team in ground balls, and is the second leading scorer. Gleeson, who ranks nationally in four categories, leads the team in assists and is second in points.
The Panthers will need Ashley Shepherd (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County HS) to continue her aggressive play at midfield. The third leading goal scorer, she has a presence on both halves of the field and is essential on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Jillian Montgomery (Newnan, Ga./LaGrange) will be the Panthers goalie anchoring the defense this weekend. She has amassed over 110 saves this season with nearly 900 minutes in cage.
Should BSC upset fourth seeded Centre, they would take on regular season champion Rhodes College in the semifinals. Fans can log ontowww.bscsports.net for live video and stats of the game Friday night.
