BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern soccer programs will open up the 2008 regular season this weekend. The guys will be at BSC Soccer Park on Friday and Sunday for the 2008 BSC Labor Day Classic, and the ladies will travel to Memphis Saturday and Sunday for the Rhodes College Tournament.
Coach Preston Goldfarb will open his 26th season at Birmingham-Southern on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. when his Panthers will take on the Blue Jays of Westminster College. Sophomore Andrew Stein is the sole returning starter off last year’s 10-10 squad, but Coach Goldfarb has filled in the roster with solid group of freshmen, all eight of whom, according to Goldfarb, “you will probably see in the starting-lineup at some point this season.”
The Washington University (St. Louis) Bears and SCAC rival Sewanee Tigers will face each other in the opening game of the classic at 5 p.m.
The women have already gotten the dust off their cleats thanks to a 3-0 exhibition win over the Division II North Georgia Saints last Friday. Coach Benji Walton will try to carry that early momentum to Memphis this weekend at Rhodes College where BSC will take on the Comets of UT Dallas on Saturday at noon, and the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs Sunday at 10 a.m.
Patricia George is BSC’s lone senior on this year’s team and she is looking to close out her career strong. The Panthers went 12-6 overall and 7-3 in SCAC conference play. The Panthers will play their home opener Friday, September 5 against Alabama State; game time is slated for 7 p.m.
