AUSTIN, Texas – The BSC Women’s soccer team started their 2008 SCAC campaign off in winning style this afternoon against Austin College, defeating the AC ‘Roos 2-1 in overtime. The men were not as fortunate, falling 0-1 for their second-straight conference loss.
The women were able to gain the early advantage in the first half thanks to a goal in the 33rd-minute from Alicia Plotky off an assist from Linda Amaya. According to Coach Walton, “We really controlled the tempo in the first half and were able to take control of the match.”
Austin came out and really turned up the pressure in the second half, but were unable to score the tying goal. That goal came off the foot of BSC’s Lauren Metzger. The ball careened into the back of the net after a miscue while Metzger was trying to clear the ball out of traffic. The goal sent the match into overtime, but that didn’t last long. Serena Murphy scored in the first minute of extra-time off a corner kick from Erin Carter to seal the victory for the Panthers.
Coach Walton had this to say about the win, “[It] was an unbelievably well-fought game, I am really pleased with our team’s effort today. It is good to get this kind of momentum going forward into the rest of our conference schedule… our hat goes off to Austin College, this game could have gone either way and it is just good to get out of here with a win.”
In the men’s game…
The Kangaroos scored early in the 13th-minute and BSC was never able to get the equalizing goal as they fell to Austin College 0-1 in their second conference game of the year.
Austin’s Chris Stein scored what proved to be the winning goal pushing the Panthers’ current losing-streak dangerously close to double-digits.
Both teams will return to BSC Soccer Park next Friday, October 3, when they will host Centre College and DePauw University for the weekend-series. The men will play first on both days, going at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and noon on Sunday. The women will follow the conclusions of those games at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
