Medlen played for the Panthers as a defender from 2005 to 2007 after transferring to BSC from Bryan College, where she played for one season and was named Third-Team All-Conference in 2004. She was a co-captain on the 2007 team as a senior, earning the team's Defensive Player of the Year award, and was named Johnny Johnson Most Inspirational Senior in the spring of 2008. Medlen helped lead the Panthers to a 29-26 record in three seasons, including a 12-6 showing in 2007. She was a member of the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll all three years at BSC, and was on the Dean's List of Distinguished Students in 2007.
Medlen, a native of Madison, Ala., graduated from Birmingham-Southern in 2008 with a degree in business administration, and has been working toward her MBA at the University of Tennessee.
"As a head coach, you need an assistant who is going to be loyal to the program and work with enthusiasm to make the program better day in and day out," Walton said. "I am not sure that we could have found a better person than Whitney to fit that role. I’ve known her as a player and have worked with her as a coach. She brings a tremendous amount of passion and energy to the game, and truly wants to learn. I am excited about the impact that her presence will have with our team, especially amongst our younger players. I feel like they will feed off her energy. Whitney will be a great fit for this program."
Medlen will report to campus to begin her coaching duties on July 13.
