Panthers get big win on Senior Day, 4-1 over Oglethorpe

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern (9-6-2) Panthers posted a commanding 4-1 victory over Oglethorpe University (4-10-0) in the final home game of the 2008 season this afternoon for Senior Day.  The Panthers have just one senior this season, team captain, Patricia George.  The midfielder has appeared in 73 matches for BSC to-date, tallying 62 starts – including a 53-game consecutive streak.  George leads not only on the field, but also in the classroom, as she was named to the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll her freshman and sophomore seasons.  She has also been a member of the SCAC Honor Roll, and was recently tabbed for the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3rd-team.

The game itself was never really in question.  The Stormy Petrels got on the board early thanks to an unassisted goal from Ryanne Arola in the second-minute of play.  Thankfully, the Panthers didn’t wait long to respond.  They got the equalizer early in the sixth when Linda Amaya found the back of the net off the assist from Erin Carter to tie the match a one goal apiece.  The half was hard-fought on both ends of the pitch.  The Panther defense recovered from their early setback to stymie the Petrels for the remainder of the half, the same could not be said for Oglethorpe.  BSC took the lead in the 17th-minute when Lindsay Miller slipped one past the OU keeper off the assist from Jillian Thiebert.  The Panthers took the one-goal advantage into the break, up 2-1.

BSC managed two more goals in the second half to ice the victory for the Panthers.  Claire Hooten had an unassisted number in the 63rd-minute and Alicia Plotky connected with Lindsay Miller for her second goal of the match in the 77th to close the book on the day.

The Panthers stepped up the defense in the second half, holding Oglethorpe scoreless in the frame.  “We came out a little sluggish in the first half,” said Coach Benji Walton, “Oglethorpe really played hard and this will be a good game to build some momentum into our match next week with a very good Rhodes team.”

Southern will close out the 2008 campaign on the road next weekend in Memphis on Friday and then in Conway, Arkansas on Sunday.  They will take on the Rhodes Lynx at noon on Friday afternoon and then the Hendrix Warriors at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
