MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The game was a battle from start to finish, but in the end, the BSC Panthers (7-4-2) came away with the 3-2 victory on the road at Maryville College (11-2-1) on Thursday night.
Coach Walton’s squad really had to fight for this one. “It is really good to come out of here with the win, this is a top-flight Division 3 power and we really showed heart and determination tonight. I am so proud of the effort that we got from the entire team, but especially from our bench which really stepped-up and secured this win.”
The Panthers found the net early, Serena Murphy scored in the 13th-minute to give BSC the early lead. Seven minutes later Lydia Rice connected again, this time on a corner kick. Maryville did manage to get on the board in the 39th-minute to cut into the Panther lead, but BSC would take the lead into the half.
The second half was a physical war of attrition. Both teams went back-and-forth attacking and defending with neither able to break through and put any points on the board. Approximately half way through the period the Scots got the goal they needed. Jessica Peterson got the ball past Amber Hernandez in the 74th-minute to tie the match at two goals apiece.
The game wasn’t decided until Alicia Plotky was fouled inside the box in with just three minutes remaining. The resulting penalty kick was sent flying into the back of the net by Lydia Rice for the game-winner and her second of the match. It was the first two-goal game for the Junior.
“The game was really physical, we had to dig deep into our reserves to make it through and I was thrilled with the effort we got from the subs in this one.” “Lauren Cage and Sarah Menton, in particular, really gave us a lot of punch when our starters had to come out to catch their breath.”
Southern will return to the pitch for a weekend series in the Lone Star State next weekend. The Panthers will travel to San Antonio on Friday, October 24 to take on Trinity College, followed by a swing through Georgetown, Texas for an afternoon match with Southwestern on Sunday, October 26. Game times are 8:00 p.m. at Trinity and 2:00 p.m. from Georgetown. (All times are Central Standard)
