MEMPHIS – The Birmingham-Southern women’s soccer team fell to Texas Lutheran in overtime, 2-1, Sunday at the Rhodes College Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. The Panthers drop to 0-1-1 on the season, while TLU moves to 1-1.
TLU’s Kelli Layden was the first to score, assisted by Sunny Valencia, to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 27th minute. The Panthers answered back at the 69 minute mark when freshman Sara Menton scored, unassisted, to tie things up and send the game to overtime.
Valencia found the net for TLU in the fifth minute of the overtime period to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 victory.
Marlena Ashby picked up the win in goal for TLU, playing the entire game and making eight saves, while freshman Amber Hernandez and junior Ruth Hanks split duties for BSC, recording two saves apiece.
The Panthers open their home slate this weekend, taking on Alabama State this Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. at BSC Soccer Park.
