Panthers score in 90th-minute to beat Hawaii-Pacific 2-1
HONOLULU, Hawaii - Alicia Plotky scored the game-winning goal with under a minute to play this afternoon giving BSC a 2-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific University in the final game of the Panthers 2009 Hawaiian tour. The Panthers improve to 8-6 on the season with the win.
The Sea Warriors came out strong in the opening minutes, putting the Panthers through their paces. If not for the excellent play in goal from #Ruth Hanks# the game might have gotten out of hand early, but the defense held and the game remained scoreless into the half.
HPU was able to get on the board first in the 51st-minute when Dyanne Anderson got an unassisted goal past Hanks. The Panthers continued to battle though, and with ten minutes left, #Linda Amaya# found #Alicia Plotky# up top on a counter attack. Plotky drew two defenders then passed to #Devon Weldon# who was wide open on the left side. She took one touch then buried the shot side net to tie the game at 1-1.
The next ten minutes were some of the more tense of the entire season. Both teams attacked exchanging shots back and forth. #Serena Murphy# finally broke through with just under two minutes, she crossed the ball to Plotky who passed it quickly to Brittany Soto who was wide open on the left side. Soto mishit her shot but the ball found the feet of Plotky who finished the ball from about the six yards out to put the Panthers up for good.
"This trip to Hawaii, has forced our team to really soul search and find out who we are, said Coach Walton. "Both teams that we saw were by far the most athletic and creative that we have seen all year long. I am so proud of how this team played today against HPU. That is the most fight I have seen out of this team in my three years here. Ruth Hanks and Devon Weldon had phenomenal games. Everyone on this team refused to give up and it showed. It was a well deserved come from behind victory and a great way to finish off this trip."
The Panthers will return to the pitch this Friday as they travel to Jackson, Mississippi to take on Millsaps in an 8:00 p.m. start with the Majors.
