Panthers second-half surge saves 4-2 win over Maryville
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women’s soccer team got another win tonight at BSC Soccer Park, defeating the visiting Maryville College Scots 4-2 in non-conference action. The win improves the Panthers to 10-6-0 on the season, the Scots fall to 11-4-1 with the loss.
The Panthers struck first, #Alicia Plotky# netted an unassisted goal that sailed over the outstretched fingers of the Maryville keeper to put BSC up 1-0 in the 18th-minute. Unfortunately for ‘Southern, Maryville’s Alex Wingo got the evener just a minute later to tie things at 1-1. Maryville scored one more time in the half to take the 2-1 lead into the break.
BSC came back in the second half with a vengeance and put up two goals in the first thirteen minutes of the period to retake the lead from the Scots. #Sara Menton# connected off the feed from Plotky in the 54th-minute and #Devon Weldon# scored unassisted in the 59th to put the Panthers up 3-2. They got an insurance goal in the 77th to put the game firmly out of reach of the frustrated Scots off an #Emmy Hollis# goal, again from Plotky.
Alicia finished the match with one goal and two assists. The Panthers outshot Maryville 28-6 for the entire match and 14-5 on-goal. #Ruth Hanks# played all 90 in the net for BSC and collected her eighth win of the season.
Coach Walton, “I was really proud of our team’s fight tonight to come from behind on a good team like Maryville. They are a good measuring stick for us, being a strong in-region team. This gives us a lot of good momentum heading into a tough weekend series with two good SCAC squads.”
The Panthers will be on the road this weekend, facing Centre College in Danville, Kentucky on Friday before heading over to Greencastle, Indiana to take on DePauw on Sunday in a conference weekend series. Game times are set for 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Check BSCsports.net for scores and stories as they become available.
