Murphy, Rice named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Seniors Serena Murphy and Lydia Rice have been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Soccer Team, it was announced this week.  Murphy was named to the Second Team, and Rice recieved Third Team honors.

Murphy, a forward from Birmingham, has three goals on the season and two assists.  She scored the game-winner in the season opener against Huntingdon College, as well as goals against SCAC-rivals Rhodes and Hendrix.  This is the second award for Murphy who recieved First Team honors in 2008.  Serena is majoring in Chemistry and currently holds a 3.87 grade point average.

Rice, a defender from Tupelo, Miss., has two goals and two assists from the defensive side of the ball for the Panthers this season.  She netted the game-winner at SCAC foe Millsaps earlier this season as well as a goal at home against Southwestern.  Rice serves, together with co-honoree Murphy and keeper Ruth Hanks, as team captian for the Panthers.  Rice was honored by the SCAC earlier this season, recieving the conference's first-ever Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week award for her multiple community activites in and around Birmingham.  She was the Panthers' women's soccer representative on the 2008 SCAC All-Sportsmanship Team.  She also holds Division I accolades, making the 2006 Big South Conference All-Conference team for her efforts as a freshman.  Rice is majoring in Spanish and holds a current 3.99 grade point average.

These two senior capains, along with co-captain Ruth Hanks, are entering their final weekend of competition on the Hilltop as the Panthers will host two more matches before the end of the 2009 season.  Tomorrow's match with Dallas will include Senior Day festivities as the Panthers host the Crusaders for an 8:00 p.m. night cap at BSC Soccer Park.  The final match of the season will follow on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against SCAC-rival Ausin College.
