BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team played their final game of 2009 today at BSC Soccer Park and defeated the Austin College 'Roos 2-0. The Panthers improve their record to 13-7 for the season.
The Panthers got a pair of non-conventional goals in this one to end the season on a high note. The first was an own-goal that ricocheted off the Roos' defender into their own net in the 13th-minute. #Jillian Theibert# shot the ball into the confusion and came away with the goal thanks to the defensive miscue.
The second goal came in the 33rd this time thanks to a penalty kick. Senior captain #Lydia Rice# buried the insurance goal on the one-on-one to give the Panthers their final margin of victory.
The Panthers controlled the pace and got the shots they wanted as a result. BSC out-shot Austin 21-11 on the day, including 14-3 on-goal. With so few shots on frame, senior keeper #Ruth Hanks# had an easy go of it for her final match on the Hilltop, collecting the three saves and the shutout.
All three Panther seniors played well today, with #Serena Murphy#, Rice and Hanks leading their team for the last time. "I am proud of the way our seniors played today, they gave us consistency and control all season", said Coach Walton, "but today was perhaps the best possession-to-possession soccer that we've played all year and I credit it to those three ladies." "We played our game and ended the season on a good note because of it, it was good to end the season on a win."
The Panthers went an impressive 9-2 against SCAC-competition this season, but remain ineligible for post-season play for another season. The Panthers will gain full Division III membership for the 2011 season. For now, the ride will end here with a 13-7 overall record on the year.
