Women's Soccer shuts out Millsaps, 3-0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team picked up a conference victory
at home this afternoon as it defeated Millsaps College, 3-0, at BSC Soccer Park.
The Panthers move to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in the SCAC, while the Majors drop to 7-8 overall and 0-6 in league play.
Junior Linda Amaya put BSC on the board late in the second half, scoring in the 36th minute off an assist from freshman Jamie Sullivan. Freshman Amanda Babbin put BSC up 2-0 about six minutes later when she bent a corner kick into the Millsaps goal. Junior Alicia Plotky increased the BSC lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute, and neither team would score for the remainder of the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Papas started for BSC and made one save in the first half. Freshman Richelle Byrd came in for the second half and also recorded one save. Millsaps keeper Molly Beth Jourdan played the entire 90 minutes and made four saves, while the Majors recorded three team saves.
BSC out-shot Millsaps, 24-7, led by sophomore Devon Weldon with seven shots and Plotky with six. Jessica Harris and Hayley Nemeth led the Majors with two shots apiece.
"After a tough weekend on the road last week, it was good to get one back in the win column," Head Coach Benji Walton said. "I was very proud of the total team effort. The work rate for 90 minutes was what we've been striving for all year. I was really pleased with how active our midfield was, in particular Devon Weldon, Kelly Craft, Linda Amaya, and Melissa Sweeney. Hopefully we can keep this going."
The Panthers are on the road for their next two contests, traveling to face conference foes Hendrix, Friday, and Rhodes, next Sunday.
