Women's Soccer opens conference play with 3-2 win against Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team opened Southern Athletic Association play this afternoon with a 3-2 victory against Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.

The Panthers move to 4-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAA, while the Lynx fall to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1 in league action.

BSC scored the first two goals of the game to go up 2-0, courtesy of a score by junior Kelly Craft in the sixth minute, assisted by senior Devon Weldon, and a goal by junior Hillary Dreyfus in the 19th minute, assisted by Craft. Rhodes scored once before the end of the half to bring the score to 2-1.

Junior Bailey Kimbell scored the game-winner in the 64th minute, assisted by Weldon and junior Amanda Babbin. The Lynx scored once more in the 74th minute, but the Panthers held them from scoring again to clinch the victory.

Rhodes out-shot BSC 21-10, 11-7 on-goal, and had four corner kicks to BSC's one. Kimbell and Dreyfus led the Panthers with three shots each.

Junior goalkeeper Richelle Byrd played all 90 minutes for BSC and recorded nine saves.

The Panthers continue SAA play next weekend, traveling to face Sewanee on Friday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m., and Centre on Sunday, Oct. 7, at noon Eastern.
