Women's Soccer wins share of SAA regular season title with 3-0 shutout of Millsaps

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—With a 3-0 shutout of Millsaps Saturday evening at the BSC Soccer Park, the Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team clinched a share of the Southern Athletic Association regular season championship.

The Panthers finish the regular season at 11-5-1 overall and 6-1 in the SAA, while the Majors fall to 7-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the conference.

BSC will travel to Danville, Ky., next weekend for the inaugural SAA Women's Soccer Championship, hosted by Centre. The Panthers will enter as the second seed behind Centre and ahead of Rhodes, who both also finished at 6-1 in league. BSC will face seventh-seeded Oglethorpe in the first round of the tournament on Friday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. Eastern.

Freshman Avery Newcomb scored the first goal of the game off a short pass from the right from junior Bailey Kimbell in the 35th minute. Kimbell found the back of the net less than four minutes later off a long ball up the center of the field from junior Hillary Dreyfus to put the Panthers up 2-0.

BSC kept the 2-0 lead until the 83rd minute when freshman Jessie Sperry drove past several Millsaps defenders to score her sixth goal of the year.

Junior Richelle Byrd started in goal and played 82 minutes, making two saves; freshman Katie Williams came in for the final eight minutes.

BSC out-shot Millsaps 23-3, led by Sperry with seven shots. The Panthers took eight corner kicks in the game.
