Panthers fall to Roanoke on the road, 3-0

SALEM, Va.—The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team opened the season today with a 3-0 loss to Roanoke College on the road.

It was the season opener for both teams, playing in the Roanoke Invitational. The Panthers are back in action again tomorrow, facing No. 9 Lynchburg at 11 a.m. Central.

The Maroons scored their first goal in the sixth minute, a header off a corner kick, and then pulled ahead 2-0 in the 26th minute off a deflection by the BSC goalkeeper. Roanoke scored its third and final goal in the 78th minute.

Roanoke out-shot the Panthers 13-7, 7-5 on-goal, and had seven corner kicks to BSC's two.

Senior Richelle Byrd played the entire game in goal for BSC, recording four saves. Seniors Amanda Babbin and Kelly Craft led with two shots apiece; both of Babbin's shots were on-goal.
