BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—A strong opening half propelled the Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory in its Southern Athletic Association opener over Millsaps, Saturday night on Preston Goldfarb Field at Berylson Soccer Park.
The Panthers dominated in just about every statistical category to improve to 7-2-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference action, while Millsaps falls to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the SAA. The win was the nightcap on a day of victories on The Hilltop as women's soccer joined volleyball, football, and men's soccer in notching conference triumphs.
A pair of high school teammates in junior Sammy Manzo and fellow junior Avery Newcomb opened the scoring in the 12th minute of action for BSC when Manzo scored off a Newcomb assist. Newcomb added a goal of her own, an unassisted score, in the 30th minute. Three minutes later junior Jessie Sperry scored the club's final goal, her team-high 11th of the season, from a junior Brittany Hand assist, her first helper of the season.
For the match BSC out-shot Millsaps 30-4 and took five corner kicks compared to none for Millsaps.
BSC hits the road for a conference match against Rhodes next Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. in Memphis, Tenn.
