BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Fueled by a strong defensive effort, the Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon on Preston Goldfarb Field at Berylson Park with a 2-0 win over conference rival Hendrix.
BSC heads into the conference tournament with a 3-4 mark in the Southern Athletic Association and a 9-7-1 overall record. Hendrix drops to 2-4-1 in the SAA and 8-8-1 on the season.
The Panther defense held Hendrix to a mere five shots in the match, and of those shots only one was a shot on goal. The one save made by sophomore goalkeeper Ansley Tomlin was enough to earn the net minder her fourth complete match shutout of the season.
An own goal in the 21st minute gave the Panthers the 1-0 advantage that they would extend early in the second half when sophomore Nicole Newton scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist from senior Devin McDonald.
BSC out-shot Hendrix 13-5 and took more corner kicks than Hendrix, 4-3. Each team was whistled for eight fouls.
BSC will travel to Danville, Ky., for the SAA Women's Soccer Championship next weekend, playing as the fifth seed against the fourth seed, host Centre College in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 7, at 2:30 p.m. ET.
