Women's Soccer set to open 2015 season at home Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team will kick off the 2015 season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, hosting LaGrange College at 6 p.m. on Preston Goldfarb Field.

THE TEAMS

  • BSC went 9-8-1 last season with a 3-4 mark in Southern Athletic Association play, finishing fifth in the league standings. The Panthers lost to Centre in the first round of the SAA Championship.
  • LaGrange was 6-14 in 2014, going 3-9 in the USA South Conference to finish 10th. 

THE COACHES

  • Sean McBride returns for his second season at the helm of the BSC program.
  • Fred Wagenaar also begins his second year as head coach for the LaGrange Panthers.

THE SERIES

  • BSC leads the series 3-0 against LaGrange; all three wins were shutouts, including a 4-0 decision last season in LaGrange, Ga.

BSC RETURNS TOP FOUR SCORERS

  • Birmingham-Southern returns its top four points producers from 2014: senior Jessie Sperry (12 goals, 4 assists, 28 points), senior Sammy Manzo (7 goals, 3 assists, 17 points), junior Nicole Newton (6 goals, 4 assists, 16 points), and senior Avery Newcomb (5 goals, 1 assist, 11 points).

FAMILIAR FACES IN GOAL

  • The Panthers also return both of their goalkeepers from last season in senior Katie Williams (10 games, 32 saves, 1.31 GAA) and junior Ansley Tomlin (13 games, 38 saves, 1.41 GAA).
