BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern College women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-1 nail-biter with Piedmont College Tuesday night. The Panthers move to 2-1 on the year.
Both teams came out aggressive and evenly matched in the first half with Piedmont edging the Panthers in shots on goal 4-3. But neither found the back of the net until the 70th minute.
Piedmont (1-2) put two goals in about 6:30 minutes apart from each other to take the lead.
The Panthers were able to respond with less than five minutes to play. Bethany Kuerten (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS) sent a ball past the defense to Taylor Andrews (Watkinsville, Ga./Oconee County HS) who made a move and chipped it in over a sliding keeper.
BSC nearly made the equalizer when a shot from the top left corner of the box drilled by Rachel Motamed (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) hit the cross bar and spun out. The follow-up shot was waved off for a player offsides and they couldn't get another look.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 7 at Agnes Scott. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET in Atlanta, Ga.
