Panthers Close Regular Season with 4-0 Win on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team shut out Millsaps College 4-0 Saturday night on Preston Goldfarb Field to close out their regular season.  The win was the Panthers fourth shutout victory of the year.  They improved to 7-10 overall, 3-4 in Southern Athletic Association play.


Four different goal scorers contributed. 


Jenny Kastner (Hamilton, Ala./Hamilton HS) scored the eventual game winner in the 19th minute of play.  She drilled the ball in from outside the right of the box to the left side of the goal.


The Panthers went into the break up 1-0 having outshot Millsaps 12-3.


Nicole Newton (Baton Rouge, La./Episcopal HS) took a pass from Kastner less than two minutes into the second half and sent the ball into the right side of the net.


Rachel Motamed (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) joined the action in the 54th minute.  She shot from inside the box past the keeper after making a move to get open.


Felicity Barnett (Birmingham, Ala./Hope Christian School) would close scoring on the day in the 83rd minute.  She headed in a cross off a corner pass for her third goal of the season.


The win marked the first shutout victory for Libby Groark (Huntsville, Ala./Saint John Paul II Catholic HS).  She spent a full 90 in goal and collected three saves.


The Panthers now await their seeding in the SAA tournament.


BSC honored its four seniors before the game: Bethany Kuerten (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS), Ali Sadler (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood HS), Ansley Tomlin (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy), and Newton.


Kuerten is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and a team captain this season. A two-time all-conference selection, she was named to the 2015 all-tournament team. Kuerten has earned Dean's list five times in her academic career, as well as, being a three-year S-A-A Academic Honor Roll awardee. 


Sadler is a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.  She has made the dean's list every year she was eligible.  Sadler is a three-year S-A-A honor roll award recipient and on two honor societies. She is also a member of the art student league.


Tomlin is a member of Alpha Chi Omega and is the women's history chair in the cross cultural committee on campus. President of the U-N-B-S-C, she is also the Global Peace exchange social chair and member of the film club and Northstar ministry.  Tomlin has been on the President's and Dean's list during her career was named volunteer of the year in 2014. 


Newton is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. A three-time all-conference selection, Nicole is a two-time team captain.  Her academic honors include being named All-Region Scholar-Athlete and earning the S-A-A Academic Honor Roll award.
