MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking loss on Friday, falling 2-1 in double overtime to the Piedmont Lady Lions.
The Panthers took the opening lead after a Rachel Motamed corner kick found the back of the net for BSC in the 37th minute. It was the third goal of the sophomore Motamed's career. BSC took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Lions responded with a Jazmin Penado equalizer in the 74th minute. Regulation ended with the Lady Lions and Panthers tied 1-1.
The two teams remained level through the first overtime, but in the second overtime, Piedmont broke through with a game-ending goal by Tori Gillett in the 117th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Blakely Jones had nine saves for the Panthers in the loss.
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Panthers return to action to host Agnes Scott. Kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M.
