BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday evening, routing the Talladega College Tornadoes 13-0 at Preston Goldfarb Field.
After a tough 0-2 start to the season, BSC bounced back in its home opener, dominating Talladega (0-4-0) in every area of the game.
Freshman Gabby Bernal (Odenville, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS) opened up the scoring in the fifth minute with her first career goal off an assist from senior Rachael Motamed (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS). From there, the goals poured in.
The Panthers would add five more goals in the opening 45 minutes, scoring in the 15th, 18th, 22nd, 26th and 29th minutes to take a 6-0 lead into halftime.
Birmingham-Southern continued its momentous run of play into the second half. The Panthers controlled possession and persistently pressed the Tornado defense, tacking on seven more goals before the final whistle.
BSC outshot Talladega 56-0 in the match with 27 shots on goal. The Panthers also forced the Tornado goalkeeper into 12 saves.
Tuesday's victory marked a special night of firsts for a number of Panthers. Eleven different Panthers scored against Talladega, each opening their accounts for the season after a goalless first two matches. Of the 11 Panthers to add their names to the scoresheet, nine were freshmen, including Abby Walker (Hickory, N.C./Fred T. Foard HS) and Caroline Seale (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul's Episcopal School), who each earned a brace. Seale also added an assist.
The win also marked the first win in the career of first-year head coach Katelyn Geddings.
BSC's 13-0 shutout of Talladega marks the largest margin of victory for the program since at least 2000. With the win, the Panthers improve to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Panthers will remain at home for their next match against Texas-Dallas on Friday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m.
