Women's Tennis adds two commitments for next season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern women's tennis program has received commitments from Payton Gartman and Kristen Crifasi for next season. Both players have completed their intent to enroll in the college this fall, head coach Ann Dielen announced today.

Gartman attends Homewood High School in Homewood, Ala., lettering in both tennis and volleyball. She received the Team Captain and MVP awards in tennis in 2007-08, and the Hustle Award in 2006. Gartman was named 2008 6A Volleyball Second-Team All-State, 2008 6A Volleyball First-Team All-Metro, 2007 6A Volleyball Honorable Mention All-State, and received Homewood High's Patriot Award for outstanding leadership and performance in 2007 and 2008.

Gartman is also an Honor Graduate, and was a member of National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, and Who's Who Best All-Around. She was named Miss Homewood High School in 2008, and received the Varsity Volleyball Academic Award for highest GPA in 2006 and 2008. Gartman received the Converse College Junior Scholar Award in 2008, and was named Birmingham News Scholar-Athlete of the Week in 2007, 2008, and 2009, as well as America's First Credit Union/ABC33/40 Honor Athlete of the Week in January 2008.

Crifasi will come to the Hilltop from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, La., where she helped her squad to five state titles and the regional runner-up spot in 2008 and 2009. Academically, she is an honors student, maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher for her entire high school career.
