BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's tennis team has received a commitment for the 2014-15 season in Katie Scherer, Head Coach Ann Dielen announced today.
Scherer, a senior at Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School and native of Bogart, Ga., has completed her intent to enroll in the college this fall and compete for the Panthers.
Scherer begins her fourth season on the varsity squad this spring and fourth season at number one singles. She was the Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA) Region 1AA singles champion the past three seasons (2011-2013), and the GISA AA State singles semifinalist in 2011, finalist in 2012, and champion in 2013. Scherer was also her team's MVP the past three years, and was named 2013 Athens Banner-Herald Prep Tennis Player of the Year. She also earned both All-Region and All-State honors the past three seasons. Aside from her individual accolades, Scherer also helped lead her team to the regional title in 2011, 2012, and 2013, state runner-up in 2011, and the 2013 state championship.
A three-sport standout, Scherer also lettered in basketball and volleyball at MDCHS. She was the starting varsity point guard in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and basketball team MVP in 2012 and 2013. Scherer also earned GISA AA All-Region basketball honor in 2012 and 2013, and All-State accolades in 2013. In volleyball, she was the starting varsity setter the past three seasons, team MVP in 2012 and 2013, All-Region from 2011-2013, and All-State in 2012 and 2013. Scherer helped the volleyball team win the regional championship in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and advance to the state semifinals in 2013. She was named to the Athens Banner-Herald All-Area Volleyball Team this past season.
Scherer also excels in the classroom, currently ranking second in her class with a 3.9 grade point average. She was a 2013 UGA Certificate of Merit recipient and was elected student body Vice President.
