Men's and Women's Tennis teams open season with double shutout of Covenant College

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's tennis teams opened their respective seasons with matching 9-0 victories over Covenant College Saturday afternoon at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn.

In the men's draw, seniors Christian Matthews and Tony DaMaia, along with juniors Brian Brandt and Ben Reardon, earned wins in both doubles and singles on the way to the team win. Freshman Alex Makarenko also picked up a win at three singles.

The women's victory was propelled by an 8-0 shutout win from the doubles team of senior Moya Moore and sophomore Sara Cohen. Sophomore Lindsey Farrell and freshman Mary Evelyn Carroll, and seniors Terria Punturo and Emily Holst also got doubles victories, and all six players also won their singles matches en route to the shutout.

The men's team is at home tomorrow, Feb. 16, hosting Gadsden State at 2 p.m., and both teams travel to face Huntingdon in Montgomery on Feb. 22 at noon.
