BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's tennis program has received a commitment from Alana Owens, who has completed her intent to enroll in the college and play for the Panthers next year, Head Coach Ann Dielen announced today.
Owens is a senior at Riverwood International Charter School in Sandy Springs, Ga., but is originally a native of Chicago, Ill. She is a four-year varsity starter and was elected 2014 team captain after helping her team to regional tournament appearances in 2011, 2012, and 2013, including a runner-up finish in 2012. Owens earned the 2013 Tennis Leadership Award.
She is also an active participant in activities off the court, having served as a Beta Club member for two years. Owens is also a four-year Honor Roll student and is ranked in the top 20 percent of her graduating class with a 3.75 grade point average. She was a Posse Foundation Scholarship semi-finalist and is a College/Dual Enrollment student. Owens is an active member at The Cathedral of Christ the King Church in Atlanta, where she teaches Sunday School and is an Altar Server. She also volunteers at local preschools to assist children with reading and other developmental activities, and she is a three-year member of the AT&T Business Exploring Program, having been elected Secretary in 2012-13 and Vice President in 2013-14.
