Men's and Women's Tennis go 2-1 at Southern Shootout

ATLANTA, Ga.—Both the Birmingham-Southern men's and women's tennis teams went 2-1 this weekend at the Southern Shootout, hosted by Oglethorpe in Atlanta, Ga.

On Saturday, the Panther men defeated Methodist University, 5-4, and Bridgewater College, 7-2. Methodist is ranked 11th in the Atlantic South Region, and Bridgewater is 15th. Then on Sunday, the men lost a tough one to Christopher Newport University, 6-3. CNU is ranked 10th in the region.

Junior Brian Brandt and freshman Alex Makarenko both went 3-0 in singles play over the three matches, and Brandt and junior Ben Reardon combined to go 3-0 in doubles action.

The women beat Oglethorpe on Saturday, 7-2, and then split on Sunday with a 6-3 win against Agnes Scott and a 5-4 loss to Christopher Newport (ranked 12th in the region).

Seniors Moya Moore and Terria Punturo were both 3-0 in singles over the three matches. Punturo also teamed up with sophomore Lindsey Farrell to go 3-0 in doubles.

Both teams are at home this Wednesday, March 5, hosting Campbellsville at 3 p.m. at the BSC Tennis Complex.
