BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern tennis teams are set to open their 2015 seasons at home this Saturday, Feb. 21, hosting Covenant College at 11 a.m. at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex.
The Panther women went 12-4 last season, advancing to the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championship. BSC returns sophomore Mary Evelyn Carroll after leading the season last year as a freshman, going 14-2 in singles play and 11-5 in doubles. Junior Sara Cohen, a 2014 All-Conference selection, also returns after going 9-5 in singles and 11-3 in doubles in 2014.
"We are looking forward to opening the season against a fine Division III program like Covenant," Head Coach Ann Dielen said. "We have four freshmen in our lineup and I am excited to see them compete."
On the men's side, BSC was 12-5 last year and made it to the finals of the SAA Championship, falling to Sewanee. Sophomore Alex Makarenko returns after leading the team with a 14-1 singles record as a freshman last season and earning First-Team All-Conference honors. He was also 13-3 in doubles play teamed up with junior Patrick Hire, who also returns. Senior Ben Reardon is also back after going 12-4 in singles and 13-2 in doubles last year.
"I am really excited about getting this season started," Head Coach Kel Lang said. "We are really young, so it is going to take a big effort from everyone up and down the lineup for us to be successful. But if we compete hard enough for long enough, we have a chance to do some really good things."
After Saturday's matches, the Panther men will host in-state rival Huntingdon on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10:30 a.m., and the women will travel to face Agnes Scott College on Sunday, March 1, at noon in Atlanta, Ga.
