BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Not to be deterred by the rain, the Birmingham-Southern tennis teams both shut out Centre College today at home, winning on the clay courts at Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham.
BSC's home courts at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex were unplayable due to overnight rains, so the teams moved to PTCC's five clay courts instead. The men won 5-0, and the women won 6-0.
In men's doubles, sophomore Alex Makarenko and junior Patrick Hire won at the number one spot, 8-3, to move to 9-3 on the season. At two doubles, senior Ben Reardon and freshmanJacob Weinacker won 8-0, also moving to 9-3 on the year, and sophomore David Goodloe and freshman Charlie Rowe won at three doubles, 8-1, to go to 3-1.
Makarenko and Hire won at one and two singles before the match was called. Makarenko is now 11-1 on the year, and Hire is 10-2.
In the women's match against the regionally-ranked Colonels, junior Sara Cohen and freshman Carlee Petro moved to 9-2 on the year with an 8-1 victory at one doubles. Junior Lindsey Farrell and freshman Katie Scherer won at two doubles, 8-4, going to 8-3 on the season, and sophomore Mary Evelyn Carroll and freshman Virginia Hammond were victorious in the third spot, 8-3, to move to 9-1 on the season.
In singles action, Petro, Cohen, and Scherer won at the first three spots. Petreo and Scherer are both now 10-1 on the year, and Cohen is 8-3.
The Panthers are in action again tomorrow at home, hosting Sewanee at noon.
