BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Freshman Carlee Petro was voted the Southern Athletic Association Women's Tennis Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced today.

Petro also earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team, while freshman Katie Scherer was named Honorable Mention All-SAA.

Petro, from Mountain Brook, Ala., enjoyed a scintillating first-year campaign that saw her battle immediately with the league's top players. She played the entire season at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in only her first season of collegiate play, and proved to be a worthy adversary for all opponents. Petro compiled a nearly unblemished 10-1 singles record while putting together an equally formidable 10-4 doubles campaign. Her only losses of the season at No. 1 singles came at the hands of Millsaps' Deena Li Kam Wa, who Petro managed defeat in a tournament last fall.

Scherer, from Bogart, Ga., also had an impressive freshman season, going 11-1 at No. 3 singles and 9-5 at No. 2 doubles.
