Panthers Split First Two Days of Competition

SEGUIN, Texas – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's tennis teams split their first two days of spring competition in Texas.  BSC fell 9-0 to nationally ranked Trinity University and then defeated Texas Lutheran 7-2.

No. 42 Carlee Petro (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) battled tough against No. 29 Liza Southwick of No. 23 Trinity in #1 singles.  After winning the first set 6-3, she fell 7-5 in set two and then lost the tiebreaker 10-8.  McKenzie Courtney (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) performed well against Texas Lutheran.  Playing at the #2 singles spot, she defeated Madison Dyer 6-1, 6-1.

Emily Whitlock (Panama City, Fla./A.C. Mosley HS), Mary Evelyn Carroll (Madison, Miss./Madison Central HS), and Lexie Dillard (Jasper, Ala./Walker HS) also won their singles matches at Texas Lutheran.  And BSC swept the doubles matches against the Bulldogs with Courtney and Wisener winning 8-0 at #2 doubles.

Against No. 13 Trinity, Jacob Weinacker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) competed well against No. 28 Chas Mayer. He was up 5-4 in the first set and was up 4-2 in the second, but couldn't hold on for the win in #1 singles.  He and Anthony Pellegrini (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS) in #1 doubles fought off two match points against the No. 2 combo of Matt Tyler and Wilson Lambeth to tie the score at 7-all, but their serve was broken and Lambeth held serve for the match 9-7.

Weinacker and Pellegrini won their #1 and #2 singles matches and #1 doubles match over Texas Lutheran. Lee Thompson (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS), George Chunn (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy), and Charley Rowe (Gadsden, Ala./Westbrook Christian School) also picked up singles wins in spots 4-6.  Thompson paired with Jameson Bekaert (Johns Creek, Ga./Rivers Academy) took #3 doubles 8-4.

The Panthers continue their Texas road trip this weekend.  They face Southwestern (Tex.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
