Panthers go 2-0 on day one of SCAC Central/West Divisional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team defeated Colorado College and Austin College, both by the scores of 3-2, Saturday in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Central/West Divisional. The Panthers move to 17-7 with the two wins.

Junior Sarah Harris and senior Casey Demos led BSC in the first match against Colorado College with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Harris also recorded a double-double with 23 digs. Junior Michelle Maciejewski, returning to action after three weeks with an ankle injury, was also in double digits with 11 kills. Junior Milica Stojanovic led all players with 38 assists, and also recorded 13 digs for a double-double. Sophomore libero Jennifer McKannan led all players with 29 digs, and junior Caitlin Dees led with two solo blocks and five block assists.

For Colorado College, Anna Clithero led with 19 kills, followed by Emily Perkins with 13, and the two also recorded double-doubles with 10 and 11 digs, respectively. Amy Schornack and Annie Bernacchi led with 20 and 18 assists, and Schornack also led with 15 digs. Carly Gelatt was also in double digits with 12 digs.

In the Panthers’ second match of the day against Austin College, Harris led again with 17 kills and had another double-double with 18 digs. Maciejewski and junior Morgan Anderson also recorded 12 kills apiece, while Stojanovic led with 31 assists and had another double-double with 14 digs. McKannan led with 32 digs, and junior Alex Norten and sophomore Christine Denning were also in double digits with 11 digs and 11 assists, respectively. Dees led at the net again with one solo block and seven block assists.

For Austin, Jessica Rose led with 18 kills and 23 digs, followed by Damaris Orasanu with 12 kills and Jenna Wilson with 10. Wilson also tallied 17 digs for a double-double. Setter Jordan Anderton also posted a double-double with 47 assists and 11 digs, while libero Gloria Carey posted 19 digs followed by Quinn McKee with 12 and Courtney Pettenger with 10. Orasanu also led with seven block assists.

In other action today, No. 7 Trinity University defeated Millsaps, 3-1, Austin College defeated Millsaps, 3-0, No. 7 Trinity defeated Rhodes College, 3-0, No. 16 Southwestern University defeated Rhodes, 3-0, Colorado College defeated Hendrix, 3-0, and No. 16 Southwestern defeated Millsaps, 3-2.

Matches resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum and Bill Burch Gymnasium. BSC takes on No. 7 Trinity at 9 a.m. and Millsaps at 3 p.m., both in Bill Battle. A full schedule of matches, as well as box scores from all of today's contests, can be found at www.bscsports.net.
