Volleyball adds four commitments for upcoming season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team has added four players to the squad for the upcoming 2010 season, Head Coach April Fricke announced today, as Alex Bothe, Sarassa Burrus, Kayla King, and Alaina Smith have completed their intent to enroll in the college this fall and compete for the Panthers.

Bothe is a 5’9” outside hitter out of Seguin High School in Seguin, Texas. She is a three-time All-Area selection and earned First-Team All-District honors her junior and senior years. Bothe was also named to the San Antonio Express News All-Class Team her junior and senior seasons, as well as the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State and All-Academic Teams as a senior. As a junior, she earned her team’s MVP honor and was also a member of SHS’s A/B Honor Roll. Bothe was also a four-year softball letterwinner, earning several awards in that sport, and she also received a plethora of academic awards during her high school career.

Burrus comes to the Hilltop from New Braunfels Christian Academy in Bulverde, Texas. She earned First-Team All-District honors three times, and was a First-Team All-State and All-State Tournament selection as a senior. Burrus was named Team MVP as a senior, and earned Academic All-State honors her junior and senior years. She was also a member of the Distinguished Honors Society for three years.

King is a 5’11” outside hitter from Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Ala., where she averaged 6 kills per game as a senior. She also played for the Team Sting National Team in 2009 and 2010. King was a Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society member.

Smith is a 5’10” middle blocker/outside hitter who will transfer to the Hilltop from Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. Smith attended St. Pius X Catholic High School and is a native of Stone Mountain, Ga. She will also play for the Panther women’s basketball team this upcoming season. At Converse, Smith led the conference and ranked seventh in the nation in blocks. At St. Pius, she was a two-time All-Region selection and led the state in blocks as a senior. Smith still holds the school blocking record as well. She was named Rookie of the Year in 2007 and Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and helped lead her team to the State Elite Eight in 2007 and Final Four in 2008. Smith was an honors student throughout her high school career, and was named to the Dean’s List both years at Converse. She was also named to the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll twice.

The BSC volleyball team opens the 2010 schedule at home the weekend of Sept. 4, hosting the Hilltop Classic.
